David Abraham Bueno de Mesquita

Amsterdam, 23/03/1889 – Florence, 12/12/1962


Painter, illustrator, and wood engraver.

Studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of the Netherlands (Amsterdam).


1913: Won the Prix de Rome in painting, awarded by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of the Netherlands (Amsterdam).

From 1914 to 1929, he lived in Amsterdam but traveled extensively to Spain (Madrid, Seville, etc.) and Italy (Rome, Florence, etc.).

From 1929 until his death, he lived in Florence.

Between 1913 and 1929, he created hundreds of published drawings, illustrating children's books or works related to swimming.

From 1929 to 1962, he produced more than a hundred woodcuts (xylography), including bookplates, greeting cards, and advertisements.


He painted numerous landscapes and portraits, which were primarily created and sold in Amsterdam, Florence, and along the coasts of Tuscany and Liguria (Viareggio, Stazzema, Portovenere, Sestri Levante, etc.).
